Austin, Texas Cool Facts

Situated in the south-central part of the Colorado River, Austin is the city is the capital of the Independent Republic of Texas. The city has become the 11th-most populated city in the United States and 4th-most populated in Texas itself.  According to the population census of 1st June 2016, Austin is home to a multi-racial population of 931,830 people.

Here are some interesting, fun facts that you should know about the place.

Austin is a huge city. In comparison based on the landmass and the relative area covered Austin is as large as the New York City. The total land occupied by Austin is about 280 square miles.

Austin was called, Waterloo until late 1838. It was in 1839 when the place was given the title of a city and was chosen as the capital of the Independent Republic of Texas. Austin then, in 1870 became the permanent capital of Texas. The name Waterloo was changed to Austin in honor of Stephen F. Austin. The man who founded the Independent Republic of Texas. Stephen F. Austin is also sometimes referred to as "The Father of Texas."

The city has lots of holy churches, to be exact according to 2015 census 358. These churches are all registered with their communities and represent 45 different denominations. The area called Greater Austin has a total of 10 extinct underwater volcanoes. The volcanoes were once active and violent, known by the name of "Explosion Craters" by many geologists. Austin has always been a positive and energetic city. The fact that supports this is its excellent response to the Great Depression. The city's population census showed an increase of 66% and the enrollments in the University of Texas were just double to that of the previous year.

The city has a fast growth rate. The Forbes magazine granted Austin the title of being the fastest growing city in America. The rate of increase in growth calculated recently showed a rating of 2.8% growth every year, which is rather impressive.It is rather impressive that Austin till now always has doubled its population after every twenty years.Although Austin is now considered in the list of cities that have minimum crime rates, there was a time when crime roots where branching with a stunning speed. In fact, the first ever serial killer the world had seen came from Austin. Code named, "The Servant Girl Annihilator."

Austin has a UT Tower. Whenever the UTs win a match, the tower gets lighted up- bright as the sun. Austinites love to celebrate the win and enjoy themselves. However, some inhuman and insane incidents have also taken place here. For example, the vague mass murders of 1966. A man named Charles Whitman climbed the tower and went on a rampage with a fully loaded gun. A total of 14 people died on the spot and many were wounded in the panic scene. This was the first ever mass murder case that Austin witnessed. Later on, medical tests of Charles showed a brain tumor in his brain that made him go crazy with the gun.
